Time Team: On the 1st February 1793, the new French Republic declared war on Britain. Bracing itself for an expected invasion, the British began improving her defences. One year later, Parliament bought land at Shorncliffe and built a redoubt [a fort], a piece of land which was considered as an obvious point of attack from the French.
